Full Job Description

We’re looking for a caring and motivated individual to join our surgical day unit team. In this role, you’ll be an important part of supporting patients at every stage of their surgical journey—from preparation to recovery. Working alongside experienced healthcare professionals, you’ll help create a safe, well-organised environment while making sure each patient feels comfortable, respected, and well cared for.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the healthcare team to provide smooth and effective patient care
• Help keep patients comfortable, respected, and supported at all times
• Monitor patients carefully and report any changes in their condition
• Assist with personal care needs, including hygiene, nutrition, and hydration
• Support patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures
• Prepare clinical areas and ensure all necessary surgical materials are ready
• Check and prepare surgical equipment to ensure everything is safe and functional
• Follow strict infection control and safety procedures at all times
• Assist with collecting and handling blood samples and other specimens
• Manage your daily tasks efficiently and prioritise duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

• You’ll need good physical coordination and manual dexterity to carry out the role effectively.
• It’s helpful to know where stock items are kept and to be familiar with commonly used equipment, with deeper knowledge developing in your chosen speciality over time.
• You may be asked to build advanced skills in a specific speciality, typically within 12 months, and could work across more than one area.
• Within the first three to six months, you’ll be expected to develop a solid set of core, transferable skills to support work across different theatre specialities.
• Strong communication skills and a positive, team-focused attitude are essential for this role.
• Good written and verbal communication, along with basic literacy, numeracy, and IT skills, are desirable.
• Over time, you’ll gain hands-on experience and develop a wide range of technical skills, including checking and troubleshooting perioperative equipment used daily.
• After induction and training, you’ll be expected to accurately understand and complete a variety of perioperative documentation.
• You’ll build your understanding of key policies and procedures, such as infection prevention and control, health and safety, basic life support, and handling accountable items.
• Ongoing learning is important, so you’ll be expected to attend study days, practical training, and teaching sessions to keep your knowledge up to date.
• You’ll be expected to understand and follow HCSW mandatory induction standards and the code of conduct.
• The role begins with a structured induction period, including completion of the in-house training programme.
