This job puts you in the middle of modern air operations. You have to be very precise and aware of what’s happening. You also have to make decisions. As an RAF Operations Officer, you will use advanced systems like radar and surveillance to get a complete view of what is going on in the air. Your job is to look at the information and think about what it means. You also have to think about what might happen and what problems you might face. Then you have to help make decisions about the mission. You have to do all of this in time, which means you have to do it right away.
In this role, you’ll play a key part in directing and supporting operations across the UK and globally. Using advanced radar and communications systems, you’ll help deliver the critical information organisations rely on to make fast, high-stakes decisions. Your responsibilities will include:
Coordinating UK armed forces during the planning stages of overseas deployments
Planning and managing tasks for a flying squadron to keep operations running efficiently
Leading airfield operations from the central ops room, ensuring all flying programmes stay on schedule
Working closely with the Army and other services to provide real-time air situational awareness
Building and maintaining the recognised air picture by identifying all aircraft over the UK and monitoring any suspicious activity
Negotiating with international partners to secure access to global airspace
Monitoring foreign surveillance satellites and flagging potential enemy activity or espionage risks
Tracking activity in space, from debris to the International Space Station
To be eligible for this role, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:
Be between 17.5 and 47 years old (you must enlist before your 48th birthday)
Meet the required nationality and residency criteria
Pass the required fitness test and meet overall health and fitness standards
Be prepared to commit to a minimum of three years of service after completing Phase 2 Specialist Training
